The Champions League is back! This competition is home to the best clubs in Europe. Every year new bets are placed on who people think will win. This year, the Champions League already has lost a couple of big names, such as Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. Does that pave the way for a new Champions League winner, or can we see a giant such as Real Madrid take the win again? We’ll list our three favorites for this season!
Manchester City
In our eyes, the top favorite for the Champions League this season is Manchester City. They missed out on the title in the final last year, which will make them even more hungry this year. Except for Grealish, City didn’t improve their squad too much, but there was no need to do so anyways. City have a B-side that would be capable of reaching the final, let alone their first team. Names like Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias are absolute world class; the fact that they haven’t won the biggest competition in the world yet, will only make them more hungry. This shows: if Manchester City keep on their Premier League form, there should be no reason for them not to win the Champions League this year.
Bayern Munich
A side that might go unnoticed, but is an absolute top favorite for the Champions League title this year, is Bayern Munich. These German giants have shown that they’re capable of winning the Champions League before, winning this competition six times already. We think this year could be the year to make it seven, as Bayern Munich have shown to be in deadly form. In Robert Lewandowski, Bayern have the most prolific striker in the world, possibly even the best player in the world at the moment. Players like Kimmich, Sané and Muller have shown to be in great form too. Will it be enough to replace Chelsea as the holding Champions League winners?
Ajax
Ajax managed to shock the world when they reached the semi-final in the 2018-2019 season. Not only did they manage to beat some world-class teams in their run, such as Real Madrid and Juventus, they did this quite convincingly as well. With rather disappointing runs in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, Ajax now seem to be back and stronger than ever. In the 2018-2019 season, Ajax had one big problem: they didn’t have a real striker. This year, they have the Champions League top scorer in their squad in Sébastien Haller. Ajax have showed some incredible football so far, picking up 18 out of 18 points in a group with Borussia Dortmund and Sporting Lisbon. Although they might be an underdog, we think Ajax have what it takes to win the Champions League this year. Let’s see if they can fulfill their underdog position!
